Designer Stitch & Quilt: Adjustable Multi-Purpose Creative Station
The Designer Stitch & Quilt Creative Station is distributed by Baby Lock Australia. Baby Lock is famous for inventing the first domestic overlocker in 1967. Since then the initial design has evolved, with amazing new technology being added, such as air threading and coverstitch. Embellishing and Sashiko machines have also been added to the range of Baby Lock products. New to the market in 2019 for Baby Lock Australia is the Creative Station, and unlike any of their other products, it does not even stitch!
What is a Creative Station? In short, it is a table, but it is much more than that. The Creative Station is available in two lengths, 150cm (60in) or 180cm (70in). There is only one width available to purchase — 77cm (30in). This is to allow the Creative Station to pass through any standard-width door frame in a house. This is essential as the Creative Station arrives fully assembled, with protective packaging, ready to unpack, plug in and enjoy.
Plug in? Yes, plug in! The Creative Station is electric. Why? To make it easy to adjust the height for different uses. The height can vary from 61cm to 126cm from the top to the bottom of the upright leg on the metal cross bar.
Lockable 75mm swivel castors are optional and increase the overall base height of the unit. Located on the right-hand side on the front of the Creative Station is a small control panel. An easy one-touch arrow adjusts the height up or down in a smooth, quiet action. This movement has an anti-collision safety system built in.
If an obstruction is detected above or below, the lifting mechanism will automatically cut off, preventing injury or damage. While the Creative Station is Australian-made, the electric lifters are made in Europe, with a lifting capacity to a maximum of 140kg.
The control panel also features three programmable heights that can be easily stored in the memory of the unit and are represented by the single, double or triple dot buttons next to the up and down arrows. Simply adjust the Creative Station to the required height, press the S button, then select the memory position for the height you wish to save. You could save cutting height in one memory, and sewing height in another memory. The height that the Creative Station is adjusted to is displayed in the control panel. No need to guess the height.
The Creative Station top is made from a tough High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) material. It is scratch resistant, water resistant, easy to clean and better for your cutting blades as it won’t blunt them like a stone kitchen bench if you accidentally run off the cutting mat. The Creative Station top has a slight textured finish with smooth rolled edges.
A recessed cut into the top allows the placement of the 93cm x 63cm (36in x 24in) double-sided self-healing cutting mat, supplied with the table or an optional silicone ironing mat 96.5cm x 66cm (38in x 26in). Mats are easily changed as cut-outs are located on each corner to allow easy lifting.
As these Creative Stations are made in Australia, you can actually request to have the placement of the recess changed from left to right when placing your order. With the standard placement of the mat recess, even on the 150cm long Creative Station, there is still plenty of room at the end of the recessed area to place your sewing machine for piecing or quilting.
An extra-wide storage drawer is conveniently located at the front of the Creative Station. The larger Creative Station features a 140cm-wide (55in) drawer and 120cm-wide (471/4in) on the smaller Creative Station. The drawer front is made from the same material as the Station top and the drawer unit is very strong and runs on heavy-duty soft-close drawer runners. It is about 10cm high, allowing plenty of height to store your rulers, rotary cutters, scissors, tape measures and other sewing accessories.
Cutting at a correct height makes it easier, safer and more accurate, and the Creative Station allows you to adjust to your own preferred height. With the addition of the castors, it provides easy movement from one room to another. Adjust the height for cutting, lower for stitching. The smooth surface is a great area to support a quilt sandwich when you are quilting.
The Creative Station comes with a standard 10-year conditional warranty. And, while shown in the images as a black top with black legs, it is also available in white granite-look top with silver legs. Fashionable and functional!
