Bee Skep – Stephanie Nericcio
You might not have seen a real one, but plenty of old storybooks feature them. Now Stephanie Nericcio has created a mini version of this cute little bee skep as a home decoration. Using a recycled soft-drink bottle and glue, she created this traditional hive, perfect as a simple project that can get the kids involved on a wet day.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 litre plastic soft-drink bottle
- Tacky glue
- Jute twine
- Scissors
- Black paint
- Brush
And here’s how you go about it:
- Start by cutting the plastic bottle. Cut the bottom off; the less you cut off the taller the bee skep will be. Next, cut off the top neck of the soft-drink bottle.
2. Start at the bottom, placing a line of glue around the base and positioning the twine on it. Continue to wrap the twine around the plastic dome shape, applying more glue as you go. Once at the top, apply the glue to the twine and coil it around on itself to finish.
3. Once the glue is dry, paint a black arch at the bottom to represent the opening the bees would use to get in.
4. Decorate as desired. (I found a cute little bee lampwork bead to glue to the top.)
