Quick Stitch: Little House Lavender Sachets

Two of life’s lovelies – cosy cottages and gloriously fragrant lavender. Julie Nyanyo doubles up on delights with her sweet lavender sachets. They’re simple to make and scent-sational!

What you need:

Cream felted wool or wool felt
Scraps of small-scale print fabric
14cm (51/2in) narrow ribbon
Stranded embroidery cottons
Embroidery needle
Dried lavender
Sewing machine
General sewing supplies

What to do:

1. Make paper patterns for the house and roof shapes.

2. Cut two house shapes from felt and one or two roof shapes from fabric. Julie recommends just having the roof on the front as the fabric tends to pucker and catch at the back when assembling the house. Cut a fabric rectangle, 3 x 2cm (11/8 x 3/4in) for the door as well.

3. Pin the roof and door shapes on one felt house shape. Machine stitch across the bottom edge of the roof and around three sides of the door with black thread.

4. Using two strands of black embroidery cotton, sew a little window in straight stitches. Work a backstitch vine with two strands of green thread and add leaves in detached chain (lazy daisy) stitch. Work coloured French-knot flowers in two strands of thread.

5. Layer the two house pieces, wrong sides together. Fold the ribbon in half to form a loop and insert the ends between the layers at the top. Pin carefully. Starting at the bottom, stitch up one side, around the roof and down the other side, leaving the bottom open.

6. Make a funnel in the bottom opening with a bit of scrap paper and pour in some dried lavender. Machine stitch the bottom of the house closed.

7. Tidy up the thread ends. Julie likes to sew the top thread through to the back, knot them and bury the ends in the bag, but you could trim them neatly if you prefer. Make lots more!
