Sydney Quilt Show 2017
Every year, quilters from all over NSW flock to Sydney to check out the QuiltNSW Sydney Quilt Show as part of the Sydney Craft and Quilt Fair, which was the first held at the brand-new International Convention Centre at Sydney’s Darling Harbour. This year’s Quilt Show was also the first since QuiltNSW’s overhaul of categories, which ensured that every quilt, from traditional to modern, pieced to appliqué and everything in between, had a category to enter at the show.
While a day out at the Craft and Quilt fair is always well spent with some quality retail therapy, it really isn’t complete without a walk around the Sydney Quilt Show. Whether you’re a traditional quilter, art quilter, modern quilter or you love your pictorial quilts, you’ll always be inspired by the quilts on display by amateur, professional and junior QuiltNSW members. 2017’s show was certainly no exception on the inspiration front, with some truly spectacular quilts on show, including this year’s Bernina Best in Show winner, Star Link by Pamela Brockwell.
Homespun and Quilters Companion have been long-time supporters of the Sydney Quilt Show, and we were proud to be Gold Sponsors this year, awarding the First-place prizes in the Pieced Quilt – Hand Quilted, Pieced Quilt – Machine Quilted and Pieced Quilt categories. Quilters Companion’s Creative Director Michelle Marvig, and Deputy Editor for Homespun magazine, Elizabeth Newton, were there on the day to present the ribbons to those award-winning quilters.
First place in the Amateur Pieced Quilt – Hand Quilted category, sponsored by Quilters Companion was awarded to Margy Syrett for her stunning scrappy quilt, Glittering Scraps (design Source: Glitter by Jen Kingwell).
First place in the Amateur Pieced Quilt – Machine Quilted category, sponsored by Quilters Companion, went to Vicki Martyn for her bright, modern quilt, Can You See the Forest? (design Source: Painted Forest by Blue Nickel Studios).
First place in the Professional Pieced Quilt category, sponsored by Homespun, was awarded to Catherine Butterworth for her fussy-cut masterpiece, From the Inside Out.
Congratulations to all the winners and entrants for their spectacular work and the hard work of QuiltNSW and the members for making the 2017 Sydney Quilt Show another successful and truly inspiring event.
