To tree or not to tree… that is the question mark behind these tiny, utterly adorable sew pea coats, the perfect easy sewing project.

Their creator, Kelli Ward, of True Bias (www.truebias.com), originally made them as Xmas-tree decorations, but they are too cute to hide away for 11 months of the year. So, we suggest you make them as little house-decoration trinkets to get full mileage out of them. Kelli was good enough to share her tutorial with Homespun readers. For pattern sheet click here.

It’s a Fine Romance Quilt

MATERIALS:

  • Square of felt
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle
  • Black thread
  • Black seed beads
  • Fabric glue
  • Scrap of lining fabric
  • Copper wire
  • PliersStep 1: Cut out felt shapes from the patterns on the Pattern Sheet, enlarged on a photocopier, if required.Step 2: With right sides together, sew shoulder seams, top of sleeve to armhole, and then sleeve and side seams, from wrist to hem. Turn right side out and iron flat with steam.

Step 3: Create the collar by first tacking the collar piece to the coat, then folding down the back over the seam and bringing the top corners of the collar down to meet the angles of the pea coat. Use fabric glue to hold in place.

Step 4: Fold down the ‘lining’ fabric by 1⁄4in and press. Open coat and glue into the inside so that it covers the neck seam.

Step 5: Glue pocket pieces onto the front of the pea coat.

Step 6: Using thread and needle, sew on ‘buttons’ (seed beads) onto the pocket and coat breast.

Step 7: Using pliers, form copper wire into a small hanger. Hang the coat from the hanger and glue coat closed.
