Crochet Coasters: A Quick Stitch Project Designed by Anette Wetzel-Grolle
Use your crochet skills to turn something as ordinary as a coaster into a work of art! Designed by Anette Wetzel-Grolle, these crochet coasters are an intermediate skill-level quick stitch. Photos by Anette Wetzel-Grolle.
What you need:
- 8 ply (DK) cotton yarn in light grey, medium grey, peach, light orange, light yellow and light beige;
- 4.50mm (UK 7/UK 6 or 7) crochet hook or size required for the correct tension;
- Wool needle.
Finished size: hexagon approx 5.5cm (21/4in) sides and 10cm (4in) across
Note: Read all the instructions before starting the project. The technique used is ‘tapestry crochet’, which involves working over the non-working thread to carry it across and to give extra rigidity to the fabric. Choose a light and medium shade of one colour (eg grey) plus a contrasting colour to achieve the 3D effect. (Anette used Drops Muskat Mercerized 100% cotton.) Australian/UK crochet terminology is used – North American readers should consult a crochet manual to ensure they interpret the instructions correctly.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; st/s = stitch/es
Tension:
21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm (4in)
Foundation chain row – Using light grey yarn, make 13 ch.
Row 1 – Position the contrast coloured yarn to travel inside each st throughout. Using light grey yarn and starting in the second ch from the hook (missed st counts as a dc), work 1 dc in the next 9 ch, making the sts over the contrast yarn each time. Check on the travelling yarn and pull it gently if needed to make it less visible inside the light grey sts. Change to the contrast yarn and have the light grey travelling inside the sts. Work 2 dc, turn … 12 sts.
Row 2 – Using contrast yarn, ch 1, incorporating the light grey travelling thread in the st to achieve a nice clean edge, work 2 dc in next st, then change to light grey yarn and work 9 dc, then 2 dc in next st, turn … 14 sts.
Row 3 – Using light grey yarn, ch 1, work 10 dc, change to the contrast yarn, work 4 dc, turn … 14 sts.

Row 17 – Using medium grey yarn, sl st 13. Pull the yarn through the last st to fasten off, leaving a tail.
Finishing – Using matching yarn colours, work a row of dc around all the sides of the coaster, working 3 dc in each of the outer points. Fasten off.
Sew in all the tails and trim the ends.
Anette didn’t block her crochet coasters, but if desired, block the coaster to shape by pinning it onto the ironing board and spraying with water and/or applying steam (but no pressure) with an iron. Allow it to dry in place, and your crochet coasters are complete!
